A Page From My Writing Life: How Intuition Helped Me Save a Child

How can we sense danger before it occurs? How do we attract total strangers who appear, out of the blue, when we need help?

Mystics say we're all connected. Quantum physicists agree.

I started working with Intuition as a lark: a bunch of us Romance writers piled into a hotel room during a regional writers conference. We were giddy and giggling, because we'd volunteered to have our fortunes told by a fantasy writer who was studying Tarot cards.

Several years later, I started working as a marketer for a psychiatric hospital. Over lunch one day, one of my therapist friends assured me that everybody has Intuition. I couldn't imagine a more exciting concept.

"How do I learn how to work with my Intuition?" I asked him eagerly. "Can it help me be a more creative writer? Can it help me stretch my Imagination?"

He shrugged. "Sure. Go to the book store. Read up on the connection between Intuition and Imagination."

The book store. I grinned. Of course!

When I set out to develop my Intuition, I wanted to get better at tapping my Creativity. I never imagined that I would wind up saving a child's life!

But I'll let you draw your own conclusions. Here's a true story from my "writing life:"

The day I met Charlie, I had sneaked out for a 90 minute lunch and was worried that I would be missed at my full-time marketing job. I had no business book shopping, and yet my Intuition was urging me to take a driving detour and turn my car into the parking lot.

I thought this hunch was strange. I was already 40 minutes late. Surely I would be missed at my desk! Why visit a book store and risk the wrath of my boss? She considered timeliness next to Godliness.

My Intuition had been this persistent only once before: on the day that it had saved me from being lured to my car by a mugger. I had learned to differentiate between Intuition and Imagination, and my gut was telling me -- literally -- that another life-changing event was about to occur.

Uneasy but curious, I climbed out of my car and walked past the various stores that surrounded the book store. I tried to imagine all the positive reasons for my gut feeling's urge to go book shopping at that exact time.

Maybe I would meet an old friend, a new business contact, or a reader who would profess to be my biggest fan. Better yet, maybe I would bump into a gorgeous bachelor who would invite me to the caf for coffee and a not-too-distant happily-ever-after!

I wandered through the aisles. Few people were in the store that Thursday afternoon, and even fewer of them were men. Instead of bumping into a gorgeous bachelor, I stumbled across a young mother.

She was sprawled upon the floor with a half-dozen gardening books. Behind her, and clearly bored, a tow-headed toddler was climbing the shelves. He was well on his way to the "D" section when I heard his mother call, "Charlie, get down!"

Sighing, I strolled to the next aisle. Had I misinterpreted my gut feeling? Intuition and its hunches could be so tricky. I recalled my many misfires, the early days when I'd tried to guess who was calling me on the phone, or how fast the pizza guy would deliver my dinner.

Meanwhile, the clock was ticking, and my boss was surely wondering where I was. I felt like an idiot.

Suddenly, Intuition seized my feet. I don't know how else to explain it. I had no conscious intention to walk to the front of the book store, but there I was, responding to some magnetic pull.

At first, I assumed that I was being released from my Wild Goose Chase, that I'd received some Higher Blessing to leave the building. Then I heard giggles. A blond bullet whizzed past me and barreled out the door.

I recognized Charlie, dashing gaily for the parking lot and the freeway on the other side. No one was at the cashier's counter to stop him. I was the only witness.

My heart stalled.

"Charlie!" I shouted, running out the door.

The driver never saw him.

It all happened so fast. There I was, calmly grabbing on to a child I didn't know. And there he was, throwing himself into the arms of a stranger, putting his utter trust in me as I dragged him out of harm's way.

If I'd hesitated in that split second, if I'd refused to follow my Intuition's urging to walk to the front of the book store, Charlie's mad dash into the parking lot would have ended very differently. There were no other pedestrians on the sidewalk -- no other bystanders who might have saved him from that car.

My knees were quaking when I took Charlie's tiny hand in mine and led him back inside the store. I found his mother exactly where I'd left her, pouring over the gardening books.

She'd never noticed that her son was missing.

As I develop my Intuition, I can't help but wonder. How can we know that an event will occur before it happens?

Mystics say we're all connected in miraculous ways. Even scientists are starting to agree.

Maybe that's how I received the intuitive S.O.S. that turned me into Charlie's guardian angel that day.

Strip Clubs and Why They're a Big Hit

Strip clubs are a consistent feature in many different cities around the world. They have developed from an audience of only men to include women and other sexualities. There are also some that are specialized for fetishes and inclinations that are very specific. In general, establishments like these should be legal and above board, complying with the laws, rules and regulations of the local, city, federal and national laws that apply to them. In many smaller or progressing cities, many residents are against establishing these types of entertainment but progress has a way of paving the way for many forms of entertainment.

Entertainment Value

Many people have this very narrow notion of what strip clubs represent. All they see is the darker side where people drink too much and indulge in vice. The reality of it is that there is also a positive side to these businesses apart from the vice. Many of them are actually done in good taste and focus mainly on entertaining the people who come and visit. Higher class venues usually have tasteful shows that deliver the sexuality that many come to see but at the same time, offer a touch of artistic flavor. Other than for their artistic aspects, most of the middle to lower class establishments is sure to meet the demands of an audience who needs an outlet for their needs and desires. Many of the audience members of strip clubs are men who might be feeling randy or adventurous. On the other hand, many are also out looking for a good time with some girls.

Entertainment for many men varies depending on their needs. Some might have some sexual frustrations that they need to express or work out while others might just like the sight of a sexy woman. Some actually like spending time with their buddies while being entertained this way. They can spend a lot of time with their friends and at the same time be entertained with the shows and the beverages. For others it's not all about the performers but more about spending time with the people whom they are with. It just so happens that their companions choose this kind of venue.

One other reason why strip clubs are a big hit is that they are usually taboo. It is not just the young who are looking for kicks but also the middle-aged and the old. Young men like to think of it as a rite of passage while middle-aged men like to spend time ogling other women other than their girlfriends or their wives while older men like to be contrary and believe that they've still got "it". Women also like to frequent these kinds of venues, whether they are designed for women audiences or men audiences. The girls like to be thrilled with the illicit knowledge that they are not supposed to be thee or that they are going against the wishes of their parents, boyfriends or husbands. Some people also really enjoy the performances that the women (and men!) put on.

Self-Definition Is a Must

We're already in the second month of a brand new year. Can you believe it? The first few months of a new year are always seen as the time to set goals and create resolutions. However... I propose something a bit different to start this year.

Over the holiday I was with my family and raised my glass to toast my being cancer free for three years. My aunt turned to me and said "Oh my gosh, I completely forgot that you had breast cancer." She really did. She commented on my positive outlook on life and said it had completely slipped her mind that I had gone through that. She didn't identify me with cancer.

At first I was mad. How could she forget such a horrible circumstance in my life? How could such a life-changing event be forgotten? But in that same moment I also thought, "Well, does it really define me anyway?"

Identity. Self-definition. At our core who are we?

In the beginning of December I took an audition class with Caryn West. (One word about Caryn: BRILLIANT!) She said, in acting we need to use both our left brain and our right brain. All the business stuff, the marketing, branding and script analysis uses our left brain, the analytical thinking part of ourselves. In the audition room, rehearsing or performing we need the right brain, our creative center. The left brain doesn't function well in the audition room and the right brain resists doing those mailings.

We're doing ourselves a disservice if we bring our left-brain in the audition. That's the time where you need to show them your soul, your passion, who you are at your core. The left brain can't do that. The ability to switch between these two parts of yourself is key.

Once you set your goals, plan your projects and tasks, develop and define your Brand, create your marketing and sales strategies - you need to let it all go a bit. Let the left-brain go. And live. Live presently in the audition room, be present in the moment, conscious of the world of opportunities coming your way everyday. No second-guessing, doubting or feeling self conscious about your choices. Let the right brain ground you. Have faith that you've done the work.

That faith will come if you understand who you are. Your identity.

As we all move forward and jump wholeheartedly into a new year, I think it's also important to take a step back. Step back and rediscover once again who you are, what you want and where you're going. This year for all of us is The Year of Rediscovery.

My personal struggle is about constantly living in the left brain. I teach and coach and analyze branding and business everyday. I'm a do-er. I'm always on the go. It has become harder to switch to the right brain for my own auditions, personal life and relaxation time. To breathe and not do anything and know I am enough just as I am. That's my rediscovery this year. I also want to rediscover my relationship with my cancer. How much does that define me? I want to rediscover my friendships, my relationship to this business, my family. How do I define those?

Take the time in 2012 to rediscover you. If you start with your core of who you are, I know the rest of the year will fall into place. You will be coming from a place that matters most.

Instead of just setting goals, ask yourself:

What defines me? What is my passion? Why did I pursue the goal I did last year? What is my must? What are my strengths as a person and an artist? What is my relationship with the business? With the world?

Let's rediscover together. Let's look inward. Let's once again tap into what makes you, you and me, me. Life should be a journey, an exploration. Let's continue to learn from our past as we move forward. Let's continue to be fulfilled by our own identity.

I'm proud to say that I am an actor, a business owner, a wife, a breast cancer survivor, a dog owner, a friend, a coach, a confidante, a student, an achiever and an empath. All of that is who I am. All of that is part of my brand. All of that helps define me.

Now go rediscover you.

The Savvy Actor mission is to empower actors to think like small business owners by creating and implementing an effective business plan, branding their unique product, and developing marketing strategies that get them noticed and in the door; ultimately merging career and life into one of abundance and success!

Letting Go to Activate Your Soul Purpose

For many people the biggest challenge they face is finding the way to live their unique purpose and destiny in life?

The issue is not that they don't have the talent or interest to find their soul purpose, in fact, it is far simpler.

For many people it is a struggle for them to fully understand their purpose because they haven't woken up to - or are only partially awake to - their unique individual place in the world as a whole unit. Most people hold on to old, limiting beliefs of themselves and the world in general. Many, many people don't realise the significance of the statement

"everyone and everything in the world and universe is interconnected."

When people become overwhelmed by all the changes in the world around them, most people live their lives within a "very small story". As a result, of doing this they confine themselves to a "small self."

This is the real reason why so many people feel that they don't have a purpose, or that they aren't able to actually *live* the life they were born to live.

The first secret in your journey towards activating your life's purpose and being able to live a purpose driven life is to develop new beliefs about yourself and about your role in the world and its future.

If you want to live a fulfilling purposeful life, first you must fully understand the challenges and opportunities of your life along with those of the larger world today. That is really the only way any of us can be truly creative individuals and find the way we can be of service to the world.

There are a number of things that need to be recognised in order for a full understanding of the shifts needing to take place for you to cultivate your sense of compassion and of the infinite possibilities available at this moment in time.

These understandings of life are:

Become aware of who and what you are and what you need to become in order to be able to deal with the complexity of our current time and become aware of how the world, as a whole, is evolving. It is believed by many that human societies are in the process of re-patterning. Social constructs are dissolving and whole new stories are trying to emerge. Recognise how this is affecting you (and everyone around you) and see how this is affecting your question "What should I do with my life?"All over the world, how we conduct business and commerce and how we interact with others is shifting. This is perhaps the largest and most important social event of the last five thousand years, because commerce impacts almost everything in our lives. The rise and fall of different cultures is changing daily-we are swiftly moving towards a planetary civilization that accentuates the uniqueness of each culture while blending them together in a true case of multiculturalism. Think of the great fusions of food and of music and of beliefs that have already taken place since the 2nd world war. There are completely new orders of spirituality that are emerging that are not about religion. The new lessons on spirituality are giving us a view of ourselves that we never had before. For the first time ever, we are recognising that we do not just live in the universe, but that the universe lives in us and we are all connected.

When you take all of these ideas together, you can recognise that there is a whole system pattern shift that is happening all around us.

In order to flow with this journey and recognise how it will affect your understanding of your soul purpose it begins by letting go of old beliefs and patterns to make room for the new beliefs and capacities that will empower you to awaken to and live your higher purpose.

Once you recognise this need to shift your ideas around yourself and your place in the universe you will activate your RAS (reticular activating system) and you will begin to see things you need and the answers to your questions on how to change your life in order to discover your unique soul purpose.

Be open to what the universe puts in your path and willing to move through your lessons even if they are challenging. In addition, remember the best way to grow is through adversity. When you find yourself in a situation that you find difficult and are able to move through it you will look back and recognise the value of the situation. How often have you heard people say about a disastrous situation that in retrospect it was the best thing that happened to them as it allowed them to move ahead on a different path on their life's journey.

Look for your own life's lessons and see them as part of a bigger picture. Learn to recognise your place in the world and your life purpose will become clearer every day.

What You Should Expect From Quality Digital TV Packages

Most television viewers today try to get the most channels they can for the least amount of money. Before making a decision about digital TV packages, there are a few things you need to consider.

You Get What You Pay For

Monthly charges are the first thing you should consider. Satellite TV companies price satellite packages based on the individual channels you subscribe to. You will not get charged for just the channels you receive with cable TV packages, but for the packages. Cable TV packages are often less expensive than satellite TV packages; however, satellite TV has higher quality and better programming options.

Programming

Satellite TV can support over 250 channels and each and every channel is digital quality. You may not always get all the local channels you want. A satellite TV system does provide for many HDTV channels and streaming video options. You will have just as many channels along with local channels with cable TV. You also receive Video on Demand with cable digital television and some HDTV channels, if your television supports it.

Equipment

With a cable company, a receiver must be installed on each television in the home and you will have to lease that equipment. This means if you stop the service you will have to return their equipment. With satellite TV, you will have a receiver installed in your home as well as one outside. Each television in your home does not have to have a receiver installed on the television with satellite television. If you end your subscription for their service, you won't have to worry about returning the satellite dish to them because you will own it.

Extras

You can watch television on your computer because high quality digital satellite systems include a TV tuner card. If you enjoy watching TV on your computer, this is something you might want to consider when you are looking at satellite packages. When you're trying to decide which provider to choose, there are other extras, like DVR's that could help in your choice.

There are advantages and disadvantages with all digital TV packages with comparable prices. Look at the channels that are offered with each package as you are making your choice. Make sure the one you choose to go with includes the channels that you watch most often. You should get all the channels you want when you choose a high quality package. Compare the packages that are offered by each company you are looking at. The price could go higher with packages for HD television. A high quality programming package should offer you many different HDTV programs that you can watch on your television.

Wilbert Haands wanted to make a change and see who had the best prices so he looked at all the cable and satellite TV packages available. With the best satellite TV deals, special and much more, you won't miss a thing when you choose DISH.

In Defense Of Paulo Coelho

There are times, when a book can completely define you and your status in the world. That is what had happened to Paulo Coelho, after he finished the phenomenon known as 'The Alchemist'. Back in the late 80s, with Tom Clancy and Jeffrey Archer hogging the limelight with their potboilers, this pulpy novel of a young boy finding a lost treasure in Africa and meeting the eponymous hermit was initially written off as abstract, superficial and unreal. However, as the sales and reprints went on increasing, no one could stop the whole book from being a modern classic.

Now, hold a minute. If you are a Coelho purist, and have been following up on him for ages, you would know that almost every new novel has been a roaring success in bookstores. Not only has each book encouraged translators from etching the author's thoughts in different languages. The book pirates also hoisted their sales and the bootlegged prints were found on the streets and waysides. But 'The Alchemist' was a different thing. It was not only a bestseller. It was really a novel that was well-written, exceptionally narrated with a Hemingway-like simplicity and powered with an uplifting message, which struck a chord with its readers.

Coelho, like most other bestselling authors, has been subject to much wrath of the veterans and critics as well. The usual criticism is that the author often forgoes hard and harsh realities and settles for optimism and convenience. Yet, as many of his ardent fans would agree, his novels are not merely fluff and bluff. They are characterized with stories of people looking for simple things, like love, salvation and peace or maybe their true destinies. Paulo likes to set these stories on a global scale, which makes their findings and quests more legendary and epic than expected.

It is perhaps the sweeping grandeur of Coelho's narration that takes people by storm. However, even his harshest critics would agree that a Coelho novel is easy to read and lucid. Like Hemingway, Coelho uses a simple language to express his thoughts or to convey what are his characters feeling. He seldom stresses on complicated words or allegories or even digressions. His prose is accompanied with his reflections and opinions. The result is that we know about the author through what is characters feel or speak.

Sorcery and spirituality play integral roles in Coelho's prose. One could forgive the critics for writing off his style as detached from the real and credible. But then, it is easy to look how Coelho has struck a chord with his readers. At one level, he depicts their frustrations, incongruities and aspirations. But at another, he makes the quests of his characters so epic like a revelation that the reader feels uplifted and optimistic.

Coelho's characters are often written off as well but they are also the writer's greatest strengths. There are characters from a suicidal young girl, two adolescent lovers, who grow up speculating about their relationship, a man who wows revenge for his wife's infidelity and more. Through it all, Coelho's characters are simple individuals but endowed with unique virtues and believable faults. So, we feel for each character as he or she embarks in a conquest.

While a few of his novels have tried to rehash the spirit and energy of his first novel, they have not entirely succeeded. But Coelho has more than compensated by widening his oeuvre of writing. 'The Winner Stands Alone' and 'The Zahir' are gripping novels that explore darker grounds- of things beyond human control like love, revenge or even ambition. Through it all, Coelho's novels are similar in their stories of individuals in alternately dark and magical quests for self-discovery.

Auditioning for Movies or Reality TV

If you are in the running for an audition post in the raft of reality shows this year then you do well to ensure that you run through the entire gamut of the checklist below:

• Foremost, ensure that you are essentially dealing with a reputable acting agency; an entity with such a shade will typically, at the very least, demand that the individuals in question essentially signs an application form and better still ensure that such one essentially presents an acting resume of sorts no matter how modest it might be.
• Secondly, an agency that has pretensions to any sort of professionalism elects to go the way of being recognized by some statutory body as a modeling agency; a good sign, but not to be taken wholly, legitimacy is such evidence such as the entity having its details in a talent search directory-this is normally a good pointer to some claim to legitimacy. Be wary of entities that essentially tag themselves as free agencies and the potential of harm that runs through their brand of doing business.
• Thirdly, ensure that your so called auditioning agency essentially conducts structured talent searches on an annual basis; to this end a reality search for the current year 2012, should be more of a regular feature as opposed to something that is left in the hands of happenstance.
• Fourthly, you do well to link up with an agency that essentially will cater for a wide portfolio of possible castings that one can finds in the marketplace. Such possible casting could possibly include the following, voice overs, comedy's, extras in movie sets, reality shows, and who knows possibly even a regular role in the movies that could herald a possible breakthrough in the movie industry.

If all the stars are aligned in your favor with regard to the above listed points then one thing that you can possibly count in 2012 or specifically with regard to the issue of reality shows in 2012 is that you essentially have one foot in - in so far as matters legitimacy are concerned. The other half of the journey - specifically how you can leverage this talent to your advantage and even go one better by ensuring that you not only get your role but have a foot hold in the industry is hinged upon factors that are at times beyond your control. Take your shot and best of luck.

Strip Clubs and Age Limits

Strip clubs are entertainment venues that cater mostly to adults. These places usually have performers who dance or put on a show on stage and show off their skills to an audience. The types of performances that occur in these premises are reserved for adults and usually for males only since most performers are women. There are also some venues that cater to the needs of female audiences. Other such places cater to specific fetishes and preferences of individuals, whatever gender they are. There are many different laws and regulations that govern venues like these. Among them are based on the age, licensing and nudity. Licensing is necessary for the place to operate. It includes licenses for operation, selling alcoholic beverages as well as licenses for each performer who the establishment hires to perform. Nudity can be a relative term nowadays because many states have become more and more strict regarding this. Most do not allow full nudity but instead insists on the performer wearing pasties or a latex skin like cover, which gives the impression of nudity.

Limits on Age

The age limit of the patrons who can enter strip clubs is limited to 18 years old and above. In many states and cities, this is the age that one is considered an adult and may try out many different things. For most if not all, of the venues of this nature, males and females who can enter should be this age or above it. The representatives of the state or the city councilors who contributed to the laws that specify this are looking out for the welfare of older children who might not be guided accordingly. Without these laws, younger and impressionable children might be able to enter and be influenced or mislead by the performances and the general ambience of the place. Venues are also required to monitor the ages of their workers and performers. It is not just the patrons who need to be above the age of 18 but also the people who work at strip clubs. The law is very strict when it comes to this age limit. Closure of the establishment is imminent if local government agents find out that it has broken any of the laws that govern it and its operation.

Strip clubs that sell alcoholic beverage in the premises are also not allowed to serve these to individuals below the age of 21. Both males and females are allowed to enter the premises if they are 18 years old and above but they cannot partake or order any alcoholic drink unless they are 21 years old and above. This restriction is a national restriction. It is also applicable not just for strip clubs, but for all establishments that serve alcoholic beverages. Even owners of private domiciles and homes cannot serve alcohol to minors. Parents will be charged with specific laws if they abuse this. The law is very clear on this restriction regarding strip clubs and other premises.

Useful Sites and Resources For Becoming An Illustrator

Even when I was in college I tried to make the time to create personal pieces and promote them effectively to the world. But, it wasn't until I took a forced hiatus from college once and eventually left again that I really started searching and finding out more about the business side of Illustration. As you may or may not know, mid-year of 2011 I ended up having to leave school due to the financial strain it was having on me. But, because I still had the drive to create art, and have the world see my work, I began to search for how other illustrator's experiences were like. I looked for answers to these questions: How to promote your art/illustrations? How to get your art into galleries? How do get your illustrations into magazines? What are some steps to becoming an illustrator, and many more.

I learned so much and I'm still learning. This will most likely be an incomplete list. But, it is a list of some sites that may reveal to you more about the background of an illustration business, such as sending out promo cards, creating a blog, social networking, style. It's not only for the freelance illustrator but also for the artist who is working on bringing their art to the public and knowing the inside and outs of marketing their business. I'm still in the same boat you're in when it comes to effectively creating a market for my work and forming relationships with my art peers. But, with the guides that I've found, I am a different person now and know more than I did a year ago. You will too.

First up: 1. Escape From Illustration Island

Yep, Escape from Illustration Island, it's served me rather well. Particularly the podcasts. I used to listen to these podcasts while creating pieces. I say used to because I've listened to every single one of them and am waiting for an update! (ETA: The podcast has come to an end but you can still listen to the plethora of podcasts up on the site) Thomas James interviews many different people in the field from Art Consultants, Art Directors, Illustrators, Art Reps and more! It's crazy insightful and engaging. When you listen to a podcast, it flows pretty smoothly even though at times Thomas James will pause and it looks like he doesn't know what to say. I love wondering if he has preplanned questions yet sometimes he ends up asking questions that are really unexpected and rely solely on what the interviewee said. Aside from the podcasts, he has an abundance of resources that feature contributions from fellow illustrators. Resources like showing examples of a contract when working with a client, sites to sell your work, tutorials on different mediums and various outside blogs and sites to cater to your desires as an artist If you've got a skill, article or piece you want to share, you're even invited to do so. (Guest contributing is one way to increase the visibility of your work.)

2. IllustrationMundo

I can't really remember how I found out about this site. It was probably senior year of high school. I do think it was at a time when I was discovering Illustration for the first time. It features plenty of Illustrators and when you click on a particular thumbnail that you like, you are sent to the artist's website to see more of their portfolio. Aside from the front page featured Illustrators, you can search for plenty of Illustrators by medium, or style. You'll see how someone uses the same materials you use in their own way, find out more on a style you're trying to hone or just look at new styles in general. Illustration Mundo gets you acquainted with artists working in your field. In the blog section, a huge bonus is at times Nate Williams (the illustrator who runs the site) will interview some of the illustrators featured. Not only do you find out their work, but you'll find out why they became an illustrator, what's a day in the life of said illustrator, what mediums they use and why, clients they've had etc. It's a great way to not only understand more about an Illustrator, but you can take a look at their work ethic, quite possibly how they landed a client, and if your work relates in some way to the illustrator or a client's vision. If it does, then that's an opportunity for you to share your work or strengthen your work if the type of clients they've had are the ones you're looking for.

3. zero2illo

zero2illo was set up by illustrator Jonathan Woodward during his own beginning stages of being an illustrator. You're there along with him while he shares his own experience. That's what I like the most about this site. Even now while his career is flourishing, he gives tips on different income streams, interviews other artists, details to you business practices that start with your own confidence as an illustrator, and provides a list of business tools you'll need as your own boss.

4. Lines and Colors

Lines and Colors I definitely found in high school and I've been keeping up with it ever since. Charley Parker (founder of this site) reviews any art from past or present. We're talking art as far back as the 16th century, quite possibly more. In each article he focuses solely on the artist, or the art form. This site is similar to Illustration Mundo in that it features your peers in the art field but it differs in that I don't recall him interviewing anyone. What makes Lines and Colors a viable resource in my opinion is you're shown a large assortment of creatives who have worked before you or are working alongside you today. You're shown sites, materials, resource books, or medias you've probably never seen before or really paid attention to. Or it may spark an interest you already have in say the area of animation, and on further view of the links he provides alongside an artist, you're given more access into how a piece is created, or how it could relate to your work. In my own experience, through reading Lines and Colors, I found J.C. Leyendecker, an artist from the early 20th century. I became acquainted with the way he played with colors, shadows, the way he stroked a brush. Those things were important to me in my work so finding an artist who came before me who could serve as a teacher was exciting. When you become familiar with the works of the artists in the field both past and present, in my opinion they start feeling less like strangers. You've also gained a wealth of portfolios and teachers if you desire to strengthen more of your own skills in their particular area. Plus, when you become more of an established creative you might be asked whose work you admire. It's a question I've seen posed more than once.

5. EmptyEasel

EmptyEasel gives you tutorials on art mediums, sites to show your portfolio when you can't afford your own website, how to set up an art blog or parts of running a business you probably didn't know about like using art registries to market your work, etc. They also provide you with the opportunity to guest write like IllustrationMundo and encourage you to do so on other sites. EE will almost always research other social networking, business or portfolio sites before they tell you it might be a great idea to join. I'm still at the beginning stage of testing out Google Adwords for my illustration print shop, and even though these articles on EE are a bit dated, they gave me the jist of what I could expect from advertising my shop with google.

6. New York Foundation for the Arts

I live in New York, but from personally using this site, you don't have to. At least in most opportunities. If you want to exhibit your work in galleries some of these are out of state so not residing in New York won't be a problem continously. Apart from the jobs and Call for Entries board, there are sections of this foundation that cater to business advice, podcasts, providing sponsorship, grants, etc. I've focused most of my attention on the jobs and exhibition opportunities so you'll have to find out more on the other sections yourself.

There are still more specific useful advice I want to share that I've read and found. But, they're from illustrators, designers, in their own voice and not as a collective site so that will be for another post. For now that concludes this list.

This article was originally published on http://jardleyjean-louis.com/blog

Jardley Jean-Louis is an artist/illustrator from New York. She works primarily in watercolor, and diluted acrylic. Her work often portrays settings based in reality juxtaposed with people, objects or actions that don't fit within that structure. See some of it at http://jardleyjean-louis.com/ or read her blog.

Auditions Check List Importance

There is also a medium that is used to advertise the try outs. Interested parties are supposed to carefully check out the details. These details will include its requirements. Before showing up to the try out, it is advisable to transform the requirements to a check list. First item on the list should be the theme of the role that is being looked for. Internalize and personalize role so that the auditions and casting calls can yield positive results. If it is lines that have to be memorized, then that is what should be done. Memorization should not be the only thing. Understand the character and make it personal.

Other than learning the lines, another important factor in the check list is a resume. It may seem like a common requirement but it is vital. In order for an actor, actress, singer or even dancer to stand a chance in getting auditions and casting calls, a beautiful resume is important. We are not talking about fancy calligraphy and font to seal the resume. In fact, that will reduce the chances of getting respect and positive attention from the team running the auditioning. Accurate information should be in the resume. If it says that the person auditioning is affluent in a certain language like Spanish, then that should be the case.

Another important item in the check list is if the person actually fits the role that is being asked for. Someone may be talented but fail to be successful in getting called. And it is not because of the lack of talent they just do not meet the requirements. Role could be intended for a child actor and if a teen actor goes, then they will not get the part. Taking kin interest to the details is very important so that both parties can save each other time and avoid disappointments.

Photos should be a constituent of the checklist. The requirement may not be mentioned but it is a rather silent and rather obvious requirement, state of the shots say a lot about the person interested in the part being advertised. One thing that should not be dared is using images that have been through Photoshop to get a perfect shot. It will be very embarrassing for the team choosing those good for the roles seeing one thing in the images and thus seeing a different image in front of them. It is important to be real thus take photos that best advertise strong qualities.

Casting calls for acting or acting casting calls are guaranteed depending on how effective the actor or actress is well prepared like having important documents at hand.

Having A Bad Day? Call The Exorcist

I was driving to Manchester to teach a meditation class the other night, and I had the radio on to listen to the evening news. (I find the daily articles about how wonderful mankind is treating itself, very uplifting...).

There was one tragic news item that caught my ear. Two adults had been convicted at the Old Baily for murdering a small child. Now this is obviously tragic for all concerned. But the newsreader then said that these two adults had murdered the child because they thought he was possessed by evil spirits.

The newsreader went on to say something else that made me shake my head in dismay. Apparently, every diocese within the United Kingdom employs the services of an Exorcist. That's right, an Exorcist.

So, it is wonderful for me to talk to God, or Jesus, or any other 'approved' saint, but if I start talking to the Devil or any other entity that does not appear on the approved list of fantasies, I need an exorcist.... you couldn't make this stuff up!

A friend of mine works in one the highest security mental hospitals in Britain. Obviously there are many ill and dangerous people incarcerated there. His job is to look after the day to day running of the ward. One of his duties is to give out medication, as and when he is told to do so, by the Doctors.

If a patient sits and talks to God all day, this is regarded as healthy behaviour.

If the patient sits and talks to the Devil or demons or any other 'unapproved' entity, then they are instantly prescribed heavy medication to knock them out, as they are displaying mental illness.... you couldn't make this stuff up!

Now I am in no doubt, that from time to time, we all display behaviour that is out of the norm. In fact, I am sure there have been times in my life when I have been so ill, or stressed, that I have given people around me cause for concern about my 'mental' health. But to explain abnormal behaviour away with the explanation of 'possession by evil spirits' is, in my mind, lazy, ignorant and primitive.

Have a look around you at the people you know. I am sure that you can think of someone who is 'out of the ordinary', (maybe even yourself). The person may be suffering from stress, anxiety, depression or one of the hundreds of mental illnesses, or 'syndromes' that are diagnosed or invented every year. But possessed....?

It has been proven that many food colourings can greatly influence a child's behaviour. How do they know the child  hadn't had a tube of Smarties on the day in question? It has also been proven that by ingesting certain minerals can greatly improve the mental health of many people. The food you put in your mouth can literally effect the thoughts that you experience.

The human consciousness can be likened to an old radio set. They used to use crystals in old radios to pick up the radio signals. If you adjusted the crystal you picked up a different station. In the same way, in the same way, if you put minerals or substances in your body, you too will start to experience different thoughts.

Don't believe me? Go in your kitchen now, get the wine out of the fridge and drink it. I guarantee that it will change your thoughts until it is out of your system. On a more subtle level, if you eat fresh fruit and vegetables for a week, your thoughts would change. You do not need to believe me, try it for yourself.

Sometimes the use of Bach Flower remedies, or tissue salts, or even simple mineral supplements can really calm the mind down. These are available from most health shops.

As a meditator, we sometimes need to explore simple solutions like these, to improve the quality of our meditation.

And as far as exorcisms go, two things can ever occupy the same space. Just as no one else's physical body can occupy the space that your body occupies, no 'mental entity' can occupy the space that your own mind occupies. You cannot be possessed, least not by an external living entity.

I am not a Doctor, or anything like that, so I am not aware of all the causes of  the hundreds or even thousands of medical conditions that could cause the appearance of severe mental disturbances. From my limited knowledge, treating mental disturbances with a chemical cosh doesn't get to the root of the problem.

But when the guy in the black dress turns up with his cross and bible, I would calm him down, make him a cup of tea - and call a Doctor.

Plus Size Modeling Agencies

Plus size modeling agencies unlike a while ago when modeling was for the straight models have increased. This can be attributed to the introduction of fresh innovative plus size trends into the market. This has meant that plus size modeling agencies have to come up to do the needed work for the plus size models who have increased and agencies can no longer ignore their existence.

It is common knowledge that since Thailand started Miss Jumbo contests for the plus size models, that portion of the modeling field has been buzzing with activity.

Plus size modeling agencies help raise your modeling profile enabling you to get through to the appropriate plus size modeling competitions and professionals from the world of fashion. These agencies also link you with advertising and media that are in search of plus size talents and or fresh faces.

The plus size modeling agencies also scout for talent and make a database that is accessible to the top players in the modeling world and the world of fashion as well. They help models avoid scammers while they ensure their safety. They do this by making sure that a model will only be contacted by partners that the agency trusts and that who is accredited.

As with other forms of modeling, plus size modeling too calls for desire for success, determination and dedication too, this is because modeling now is a field that is being taken seriously than ever before and some people's lives depend on it. This means that the competition is fierce and you need a good agency that will fulfill the requirement demanded by the client for the job before the model can even think of competing against the thousands of models who have taken up the trade.

Good modeling agencies work towards finding work for the models that are curvy in all the right places. These agencies are supposed to act squarely as their employment agencies when it comes to negotiating contracts between models and potential clients. Some agents are independent while others work for agencies. Another important role that agencies play is listening to what the client needs and sort that out through potential models to come up with the ones that best suit the client's needs. This saves time and resources for companies that are interested in models.

Plus size models are however warned against just signing with agencies without doing a thorough background search about the said agencies. An easy pointer should be registration. A legitimate agency should be listed either online or on the phone book or both. Check with the business bureau for any complaints filed against the said agency before you can sign any agreement with them. If the agency wants your money upfront before negotiating your contract, run. They are not acting in your best interest.

Plus size modeling agencies and modeling talent agencies almost play the same role but it is absolutely important that you do a refined background check before enlisting yourself with any of them.

Acrylic: A Revolution in Art, Design and Jewelry

Acrylic sometimes called plexiglass refers to a hard transparent plastic material. Originally used for industrial purposes as a lightweight alternative to glass, it is now not only found in most spheres of daily life, but it has also opened new exciting avenues in jewelry, design and art.

The discovery and production of acrylic acid in 1843, was followed by other developments, particularly the discovery of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), more commonly called acrylic. Patented in Germany in 1933, Plexiglas is a well known brand name. Other brand names - such as Lucite and Perspex - are used interchangeably with the term acrylic.

Commercial production of acrylic dates back 1936. It opened new possibilities and was used on a large scale during World War II for the production of bomber cockpits and nose compartments, gun turrets, submarine periscopes. Nowadays acrylic products are used for everything from picture frames to bulletproof windows, aquariums, shower compartments, etc. Compatible with human tissue, it is widely used for implants and prosthetics, as well as for cosmetic surgery and dentistry.

Acrylic in design

Acrylic definitely appeals to designers and artists, offering new opportunities for expression.

Furniture designers began to incorporate Lucite and other acrylic products in their designs in the 1960s and 1970s. Acrylic continues to inspire designers with its plasticity and ability to transcend functionality through its transparent character and weightlessness. Although acrylic furniture has been available for many decades, it still gives a tone of modernity and lightness to a room.

Novelty in design led to the use of acrylic in musical instruments such as guitars and drums. The transparent body of acrylic electric guitars reveals the inner workings of the guitar without compromising sound quality. Acrylic drums have also been adopted by famous musicians such as the late John Bonham, drummer for Led Zeppelin.

Acrylic in fine arts

Leroy Lamis is one of the artists who adopted acrylic in his creative work. Strongly influenced by constructivism, he worked intensively with acrylic in the 1960s and 1970s, taking advantage of its capacity to refract and filter light. His constructions may be found in a number of museums, especially the Brooklyn Museum or the Swope Art Museum.

Renowned for the Washington National Cathedral's Creation Sculptures and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial's Three Soldiers, Frederick Hart was the first artist to cast figurative work in clear acrylic resin. He particularly appreciated the unique watery and flowing quality of acrylic and the possibility of using these qualities to suggest dreams, memories and visions.

Other artists mixed pieces of acrylic with other materials to create contrasts or maybe complementarity, as exemplified by Salvador Dali's bronze and acrylic sculpture, Elephant Spatial from 1980.

While pieces of acrylic may be used in fine arts, some artists paint directly on an acrylic surface. Sometimes, the artist will paint both sides (reverse paintings). Acrylic also allows etching directly on the surface with a special tool, thus avoiding the use of acid, and be fitted with LED lights to make it glow when lit.

Acrylic paint has joined more traditional paints in fine art. It has unique characteristics: more intense hues, pure colors and adaptability. It's also light- and age-resistant. Diluted with water, it works as watercolor; it also is used as a substitute for oil paints.

Kinga Kozakowska is one of the many artists using acrylic paint on canvas. The specific qualities of this paint allow her to mix it with sand and occasionally transparent polyester to create a universe where light and shadow can shift and combine. In this way, she mediates her vision of space and of the vibration of life through that space.

Trends in jewelry design

Acrylic is also widely used in another creative field: jewelry production, whether in mass production or in designer jewelry.

Mass produced acrylic jewels are widely available. While cheap, they can be quite attractive and of a decent quality. Obviously, jewel designers such as Binglabart (Italy) or Ikuo (Paris) do offer much more exciting pieces in terms of inspiration, creativity and know-how. Some of these jewels can be considered wearable sculptures, with a strong visual impact demonstrating sophistication and elegance whether classical or eccentric.

A commitment to the environment was the motivation for Claire Requa Design (Denmark) to expand its production of interior accessories in plexiglass with a jewelry line. Leftovers from the production of acrylic chandeliers are now repurposed into light, funky jewels. This is indeed an original and creative way of addressing the modern concern for waste management of a man-made product.

The discovery of acrylic acid was a turning point in modern life. Acrylic products have become an integral part of modern life in heavy industry, daily life and, not least, the world of arts and design. Designers and artists have embraced the material with enthusiasm. Its combined qualities of plasticity, lightness and transparency provide artists and designers with a unique way to mediate their emotions and artistic vision and to offer an exciting avenue for the creative process.

Eliane Kristensen is a French citizen living in Denmark. You can meet her on her Facebook page 1001Art ( http://www.facebook.com/1001Art ). The aim is to enjoy together the many facets and the richness of art, particularly contemporary art.

Essential Factors to Consider When Attending Casting Calls

A casting call can be quite tricky. It is similar to a job interview for actors as well as actresses and this is one of the factors as to why, one must adequately prepare for the call. Making a good and lasting impression is one of the best strategies to use when casting calls. This is because there are many people out there who attend auditions therefore, if you impress casting directors, you stand better chances of getting an opportunity for a particular show.

Carry Out Thorough Research on Audition

When attending a casting call, it is essential to carry out a thorough research on the process. Know what is expected of you at the audition and go an extra mile to discover the content of the script. Read through the script to have a complete understanding of your role in the audition. This will help you to make wise and informed decisions as to whether to have a monologue or not. Note that when using a monologue, it should be of the same style as well as the genre of a role you are given in an audition. Therefore, carrying out a proper research is very essential for your success.

Plan Well

Planning is very important when attending casting calls and any other job interview. Depending on the type of audition, it is very essential to dress for the occasion. For this reason, plan well on what to wear. You must suit the character or the role you are given. This is why you should go through the script and do your homework well on the role you are auditioning. Proper planning enables you to leave a lasting impression in the minds of casting directors. What's more, dressing well as per the role brings out the character and from that, directors will able to judge whether you are best suited for the role or not.

Planning also allows you to have all the copies of your pictures and resumes to the event. This can be done a night before the event. Note that directors can ask for such copies for verification purposes and without all essentials, it will create a bad impression.

Relax and Build Your Confidence

When auditioning, it is important to be relaxed and confident in everything you do. Therefore, take some good rest and practice before the event. Resting will allow your mind to relax and get ready for any question that casting directors may ask. On your day, be at the auditioning hall early enough to avoid inconveniences.

The first impression is always important when attending a casting call. Therefore, take time and prepare efficiently for casting calls so as to impress casting directors.

How to Prepare for Auditions in 2012

It is normal for even the most established actors, singers or dancers to dread an audition. This is a one time thing, either you impress your director or the job will be gone. Considering that this is a do or die chance, you need to perfect your skill to impress the auditioning panel to guarantee fair consideration from the auditioning panel or director.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for your auditions in 2012:

i. Do some prior research. Try to find out what the audition is about. So what are the directors looking for and what is the audition all about? Is it about singing, dancing, performing or acting? It does not matter whether you are auditioning for fun or seeking employment, understanding your script is important either way.

ii. Do what you know best. If you are to perform a song, choose one that you can give the best and ensure it is the kind that is within your cords range. You do not want to embarrass yourself trying something out of your range. Do something that is within your expertise area.

iii. Practice, practice and practice. Practice makes perfect so they so. By practicing, you will not only be polishing your expertise but you will also enhancing yourself for provision of deeper and more advanced characterization.

iv. On the auditioning day, you will want to be your best. To ensure this, you will need to dress professional if a dressing code is not provided, be well rested and composed. Regardless of what you will be auditioning for, you will need to use your voice. Therefore, ensure that it is polished.

v. It is important that you come with some of your resumes and headshots. Sometimes, you may be required to showcase what you have been able to do in the past.

vi. Ensure that you get to the auditions in good time to allow yourself time to relax and compose yourself. Once at the auditions, you can decide to do some warm ups. Then wait for your turn to be invited in.

vii. After the audition, it is important to wait for any comments that would be forthcoming before leaving the stage.

For anything to come out successfully, proper prior preparation is a must. In as much as it is not a success guarantee, preparing for your auditions in 2012 will enhance the chances of giving your best. It will be very disheartening to get into an auditioning hall unprepared, disorderly and late.

Long Ago Life (The Arboreal Ancestor)

From my dreams, or perhaps I can call them visions, if not mental pictures, I try to reconstruct for you, my little friends here and now, a show of that vanished world in which I do believe I've ventured into a thousand times or more. Perhaps even lived parallel with; one of my two worlds-who is to say which one was more real than the other-now in my old age, I do believe it is the other one that is quieter, that is to say, deader, waiting to live, to rise like the tides of the sea. Perchance it is all made of ghosts. A world full of years for me; maybe I am the only creature with two personalities merging, or about to at this time.

I was living these dreams you see, in this other world, a far-off world; all I can say is that I saw man's existence in those far-off days-what we are becoming, or I expect-shall become. I've also discovered I live in what they call, 'the mid-Pleistocene' Yes, I'm from the trees, that part you all know, we are all from the trees, here. The best I can do with this is to call it a mental state and I'm sure they're many. I have learned I am a remote ancestor, to them. They are right, when they say I live in trees and clutch branches-how they know this I don't know, but I know where they live, and they live in what they call cities, and some of the city's structures that I've visited, the very ones they live in, are in part, made of trees. Hence, when I am with them, I am asleep, as if falling though space. When I awake I simple remember I am their arboreal ancestor-and usually back in this here tree, where I fell to sleep, where it all started from.

I am part of the new race, my tree dwellers, my little friends, I know you do not, cannot understand this, foresee this, but through me, and those like me, the race will live on, I am assured of that now. How I acquired this reasoning-wherewith, to see light where once there was none-to explore what to me is the unnatural world in my sleep, where it takes charge of me-is still a mystery, perhaps always will be, maybe all one is allowed are strained fragments of truth-so the voice of my mind tells me this.

This all makes me a freak of nature of course-like a two headed rat: for that is what he is, because that is how he is-and in a similar manner, that is what I am, because that is how I am-if that makes any sense-we are what we are, yet we can become more; with good judgment.

Dreams can protect one, and in a like manner, they are what they are; for some, like me, dreams also seem to process my fears, and allows me to I live in a binary world one needs to be guarded in-and so in the long run, that other kind of dream-fear, keeps me alert; even more-so while in this other world I speak of. You see, we must take advantage of all the assets we have, all the opportunities we are allowed. That is why I have allowed myself, year after year to venture into this other world. At first it's more difficult to step into this binary, then it becomes easier and easier. When I say binary, I mean in essence, my mind consists of two parts, or components. Twofold: by and large, it is a system of numeration having as its base, me. Again, let me repeat, my being lives in two sections, having two subjects, perhaps we can see this in the stars, likewise.

These other dreams I have are simply more pronounced, deeper, and stronger, than those of my kind-you, the tree people, and some of those we call the fire people, and the stone dwellers. Yet I run like they do, but from the large snakes, the gruesome bears, the opened mouth lions: they of course have them but they are in cages; in my dreams when I go to that other world, with the cities, they have different monsters, just as deadly-yes indeed, some deadlier, I will explain in a moment.

I am a freak of heritage-yes oh yes, of some perhaps birthright, bequest-some legacy in the makings. I do not believe I have lived before, I simply have visions-the mind sees and develops. It roams through time-as if it had ripples, unto this world far-off which it has selected for me, that becomes my present, what I see is a fragment of me, parts of me. I am the ancestor of these parts. I wonder what I'd see if I could go in the opposite direction-would I climb out of the sea.

Anyhow, they call me in my dream world, 'Long-ago life.'

To get into this dream state one must let go of the present, perhaps we can call it a stage of disassociation; blue visible echoes seem to surround me until I'm submerged while in this awkward word called disassociation. I've heard that word someplace-disassociation, perhaps I should call it: detachment or disconnecting: for me it means to cut off from one world to allow myself to venture into the other-if that makes for any logic.

At any rate, conceivably I am picking up transmitted memories, meaning we have already lived before we've lived-if this is a possibility. It all sounds corny doesn't it? Fine, say what you will, but here I am, real and alive. I am that, which has learned the raw beginnings of my race are now, I am it, and like it or not, you are part of it.
My first dream was something like this:

There was a large space between us, between my two personalities and the two worlds-which is really one world, time separated. I did not fear that space, but it did devour me-while in my state of dreaming. There were strong forms crashing, storms I feared at first, I was unfamiliar with all this you must understand, then I learned they were war machines, cars, planes all confusing I assure you at first. There were masses of humans, like ants. The future was as much a nightmare for me as our world is for us, which they call the past. When I awoke I was still in my tree-this being the first time, I was unsure where I'd wake up.

It was all at first an untidy heap, and so I shall not impose it upon you, no need to, it's too difficult to explain, and surely more-so in understanding. When one dreams long enough, and goes back to the same location in time and space, everything kind of straightens itself out. Familiarity breeds many things, and I could at a certain stage piece together, in proper order: this and that of this other world, the world I am trying to reconstruct for you. The very one I seemingly lived in, while in my dream state-that is to say, my second self lived in. They know all about us-these people in this other world, it is only wise to know about them, is it not?

I understand I have not framed this into a comprehensive story in the least, but I do hope, you have some kind of an understanding of those who will come after you, for when I am gone, you will need to write this on the walls of the caves-like the cave dwellers do, so your children's children will know what to expect.

Before I close, let me just say, I had never formed friendships on these so called trips: I never seemed all that interested in doing so, although I could have, I actually learned some words of their language, not just as they call-as we do-grunts.

I do remember, on all sides of me were buildings, tall stone structures, and as I've already mentioned, which I shall mention again in passing: they use trees, what they call wood, cut from the trees that is, likened to the ones we live in, for solid structures within those framed stoned buildings.

And what they called trains, their sounds were like grunts of wild boars-that's not funny, it's the truth. The trains I can never explain, 'seeing is believing,' in this case.

Those first dreams I sat in a park petrified, motionless-my instinct told me to do just that: observing, while curiosity fermented inside of me. I did scream once-to hear myself possibly, I don't know why. It is hard to describe the reaction of the people-they ran just like we run from the wild boar. I even saw an old man once, he took his teeth out of his mouth of all things, snarling at me, and he put them back in. I just made grimaces like a chimpanzee, and it frightened him. These people involuntarily bunch themselves together and mosey about here and there, much like we do, although we are not the mass they are, we are a much smaller gathering. This took the breath out of me also.

Well, it's time for you to go down and find some food, these branches are hard on the spine and the bump, if you know what I mean, and I know you know what I mean, by your chuckling and squirming about: I also know your parents think I tell wild and tall tales-but interesting if anything, and perhaps it is better left that way-but I know one of you will carry my wondrous words and gestures and dreams forward-which one, only time will tell.

As I say, when you leap, be careful of the overhanging branch with your hands. Never forget, the boars have clashing tusks, one instant they are there, the next they are not. At any rate, I must remind you of this, lest your parents blame me for not informing you-we are only a dozen feet from the ground, I'll have you know. Hold on with one hand, onto the branch, and drop to the ground in safety. Sometimes when I tell these tales you get so very excited, forget what world you live in. I am not scolding you, just so stop gnashing your teeth, there are no angry beasts to peer down upon as of yet, and I am one of you. Unless one of you have saw one approaching, and you have not indicated so.

What's that you gesture?

I failed to describe these apes?

No we are the apes; they are-oh well, they are nothing like us, and we are nothing like them-oh, I suppose I shouldn't say nothing like us. But they are not anything on earth or under the earth, as we know it to be.

Describe the old man, you gesture?

Well, let me try quickly, if in fact I can: he was large; the old man was large, much larger than us, perhaps two-hundred pounds, in comparison; as we are no more than a hundred and thirty pounds at our most. Our faces are broader and flat and our eyebrows hang over our eyes more than his did. Yes, it is the eyes, or much of it I should say, is in the eyes. We have a very, very little nose compared to them, or in this case, the old man. They have a nose like a beak from a wild bird. It is long and pert near reaches their mouth. Don't laugh; this is what your future children will look like. We have no bridge for the nose; they have a bridge you can leap off of. And how they breathe through those little nostrils, I'll never know.

The forehead you gesture how is the forehead? That's a good question.

Yes, that too is a trying dilemma to describe, but I will try: it is not slanted like ours-not slanted back from the eyes that is, and they have big, and I mean big heads, for such skinny necks-they are like big busy trees with little stems on them. How they balance them is surely a miracle. But perhaps the air holds theirs in place somehow: thicker air perhaps.

On the other hand, we have thick and short necks, in comparison. Gosh if they couldn't walk erect, they'd have to carry those heads from here to there.

They are if anything, small shouldered beasts, clean looking, although the old man was not, but I doubt he represents the majority of these advanced people, without beauty, and little strength.

We are much more hairy than they are, but they live in framed structures, we don't, they don't need a hairier body, we do. And their legs are longer than their arms, unlike us. That is perhaps because of the trees, and the stretching we do. They walk flat on their feet; it is hard for us to do this, in long periods. Their toes, believe it or not, are in line with one another, especially the great toe. This is perhaps why they can walk flat.

On another subject, I would miss I guess, the leaping from limb to limb, if I had to live in their world for any length of time.

I can see the old man now, waking up on the park bench, walking under the trees as if he was once, one of us, howling from that drink he drinks, called alcohol: howling like we do, when the boar chases us. Yes, he drinks the blood of the boar. And then he is like us, with rage, pausing now and again to beat his chest with his clenched fists, again much like we do. But he hesitates, unlike we do, and he is at a loss of what to do next, unlike we are, we cannot afford to be like him-unguarded.

Now you all must move your muscles, the surge and thrill of the leaping is required. You've kept me much too long in the tree talking.

You ask again, what do the children do?

I think they swing axes and chop down trees. To be honest, I've never seem them to much, I just made that up, they are for the most part lazy, but that is the way they are taught.

Tweaking Your Mindset - Become the Solution That Everyone Is Seeking!

Actor * Entreprenur * ActorPreneur

If you think like an entrepreneur, you'll go about creating products and services -VALUE- for people with PROBLEMS. That is an accurate description of what solo/entrepreneurs do. In case no one told you, as an actor you ARE a solo entrepreneur. You're running your own business.

But many actors think of themselves ONLY as artists - struggling, suffering, creative, full of talent and energy but not as a person in business. The word "Business" summons up for many actors a negative image- a quiet little somebody in a cubicle in a large office with a boring 9-5 job or working for an imperialistic boss in a suit demanding long hours doing mundane tasks - not the creative life of a performer.

Let's just tweak the MINDSET for a moment. Instead of thinking of yourself as JUST an actor with creativity and talent, someone who is dependent upon the good will of an agent or casting director to get work, think of yourself as the person in control who is offering "them" (the industry) a SOLUTION to their problems and VALUE with that solution. The VALUE is in the quality of your training and talent- your brand, your "essence". YOU are a valuable commodity!

As an ActorPreneur you just have to realize that you're in business selling a valuable CREATIVE PRODUCT which is a SOLUTION. Everybody needs a solution to a problem! Read that again and understand it. You are not dependent, helpless and vulnerable because you're an actor waiting for a lucky "break". You are in fact in control helping Industry folks solve their problems-

WHO TO CAST to make the play, TV series or Film project successful? YOU!

WHO TO SIGN as a client so they have a high income? YOU!

You are not the problem. You're the SOLUTION. You're a hero/heroine. You have just saved them an enormous hassle. Without YOU they (CASTING DIRECTORS) would struggle trying to cast a film or series.Without YOU they (AGENTS) wouldn't make an income.

Get it? YOU are the VALUE, HOPE AND DREAM of the other guys-those Industry Pro's who created the projects: TV series, Films, Plays, Commercials. It's a Win-Win.

BUT, here's the catch. You won't be successful if you don't solve a lot of problems for a lot of Industry people on a consistent basis- weekly, daily.

So, the next step as an ActorPreneur is to develop a Network of people who rely on you to solve their day-to-day problems. You become the "go-to-guy/gal" when they're casting a specific type. YOUR type. The more people you know and more importantly KNOW YOU, the more problems you can solve, the more jobs you'll be offered, the more roles you can play, the more money you'll make, the more known you'll become.

It's easy. It's an upward spiral all the way to the A List.

So all you have to do is - Be the BEST actor you can and get to know the MOST industry people you can.

That's the total solution. You can meet one at a time in those "pay-to-meets" doing workshops and seminars. That's like inventing the wheel every day. Or you go all out in "one fel swoop." That's why we have ActorMarathons - so you can meet 50 top Industry contacts in 2 days (LA) or 2 evenings (NY). A good investment, affordable and available if you're at the top of your game.

So here's your Action Plan:

1- Keep training. Be the BEST you can be and be clear about your TYPE and BRAND- what you are selling as a solution to Casting Directors. (The lesson here- Don't be generic.)

2. Keep networking and auditioning for everybody!!! When 500 industry people know you, you'll get an offer or two a week to WORK! It's crunching the numbers as business people say.

Become a Better Guitarist by Spotting and Improving Problems in Your Playing

Spotting problems in your playing is an important component of improving as a guitarist and musician. These problems are signs of what you need to improve on to become a better musician. This may seem like simple advice but it is a skill that needs to be developed. Sometimes it can be difficult to spot troubled areas in your playing for many different reasons. That is why it is important to have different techniques to help you spot problems and improve these areas of your playing.

When I talk about spotting troubled areas in your playing, I am not talking just about the mistakes that are obvious and noticeable. While these noticeable mistakes need to be taken care of, there are likely other mistakes in your playing that you may not notice. The mistakes that you are not noticing are the ones that may cause the most problems. These mistakes could be holding you back in your playing and you probably do not realize that there is a problem. Even though you may not notice these problems, it does not mean someone listening to your playing wont notice them. By fixing these more specific areas of your playing, it will separate you from many other guitarists!

The best way to spot troubled areas in your playing is by recording yourself. You do not need expensive recording equipment to use this technique effectively. Any recording software will work or if you want to go old school you can use a tape recorder. Listening to these recordings will easily allow you to take note of the problems in your playing. The reason it is important to record yourself is you can listen critically and spend as much time as you want listening to the recording. When you are playing, you are focused on your playing and cannot listen critically. You can notice obvious mistakes in your playing but you often will not be able to hear the less obvious mistakes. Just this technique of recording yourself can show some weaknesses that you could improve.

When you spot a troubled area, you need to make sure you spend time focusing on improving that area. Take whatever you are having problems with and repetitively practice it. Repetitive practice can usually help improve areas that you find difficult. It is important to just focus on the section that is giving you a problem. For example, if you are having trouble with one section of a song just practice that section repeatedly. Many students I have taught did not use this method until I showed them it. They usually will practice the whole song repeatedly and hope they will improve on the section that they found challenging. The problem with what they were doing was they were spending more time on the parts they knew well and not on the harder parts. When you isolate the problem and focus on improving it, it usually improves rapidly.

Practicing problem areas slowly is an important step for improving the problem. This is common advice among guitar teachers to students. The reason to practice slow is you want to develop muscle memory of correctly playing whatever you are having trouble with. Of course, you will not always stay at a slow tempo when practicing. Once you can play whatever is causing problems for you at a slow speed, correctly and consistently, then you can start increasing the speed. Normally, you want to gradually increase the speed up to the desired tempo. This allows the muscle memory to develop with the increased speeds. Focusing on practicing slowly and gradually increasing the speed will help get you to the point of easily playing what was giving you problems.

These techniques can be used to effectively help you improve as a guitarist and musician. More importantly, they should be used together in your practicing. Once you find a problem in your playing, isolate the area and practice it slowly, gradually increasing the speed. When you get to point that you think you are playing it pretty well, record yourself and make sure it sounds good. If it sounds good, congratulations and keep using these techniques to improve you playing!

Hey, Look At Me! - What Every Artist Wants Most

Some artists will smugly tell you that they don't need to share their work with others; that they do what they do to please themselves. They're lying! They're peddling baloney along with their art.

I used to live with such a man. Despite his solipsistic claims, he often brought young women back to our place to ogle his artwork as he ogled them. When asked why he didn't present his artwork to curators, he replied, "I'm not a good salesman."

Artists are salesmen, by nature! We're always looking to be compensated for our efforts, with attention or money or both. Of the two, attention is more important.

Don't get me wrong. Money is great. But we artists will do what we do--whittling down truth and beauty into consumable portions--whether or not anyone gives us money for our offerings. It's the attention without which we cannot survive.

No artist creates a sculpture, a song, a story or a joke without saying to someone else, in essence, "Hey, look at me!", even if it's only to a stranger at a party. Art requires a response, in order to complete its function; in the same manner that a carriage requires a horse, or that a wealthy man requires a prenup.

Even that most reclusive of poets, Emily Dickinson, sought readers. She wrote over 1800 poems in her short life, often giving them to friends in gift baskets of flowers grown in her garden. It is said that these recipients typically appreciated the flowers more than the poems.

Can you imagine, now, receiving such endearments from Emily Dickinson? It would be like receiving postcards from Toulouse-Lautrec, or sheet music from Bach.

It is commonly believed that Emily Dickinson could not come out of her room to greet houseguests because she suffered from agoraphobia. I rather believe it was because she found some of her poems in the community compost, along with her wilted flowers, and said, "I'm done with you people!"

Many years ago, when I was a budding composer, I wrote arrangements for friends of mine who played in a band. This was way back before notation software came on the scene. My manuscripts were meticulously notated by hand. When I attended one of their rehearsals, I found my pages scattered on the floor, further defiled by dusty shoe prints. It was a good lesson. I stopped giving away my work, especially to friends.

Artists typically feel entitled to some attention, and resent being ignored. Approval is always welcome; but disapproval is better than no-proval. No attention is tantamount to the guest-of-honor never showing up at a surprise party. Even if that person hates the party, it's still a success. But if he or she never shows, then everyone else is left wondering, "What was all this for?"

Consequently, when artists don't get enough attention from their work, they sometimes feel compelled to rub their ids in people's faces. When Lucie Dupin couldn't get published because she was a woman, she wore men's clothing, smoked cigars and changed her name to George Sand. Oscar Wilde satirized Victorian hypocrisy and refused to deny being gay; he wound up in prison.

Me? Like Emily, I sometimes loath stepping out of my solitude. Like Lucie and Oscar, I enjoy blatantly defiling taboos--to remind people how arbitrary they are--for which I am predictably punished; an easy task. All anyone has to do, to beat me to within an inch of my life, is to ignore me. At least Oscar had his day in court.
