Cruz in control in Golden Gloves

LOUIS CRUZ (Atlas Cops N Kids) has a cobra-like style. Throughout his fights, the 141-pounder will remain quite still, carefully choosing his punches, then striking with a sudden, blinding reflex when his prey seems most vulnerable.

Josue Vazquez (Mendez BC) felt the venom from one such strike Thursday night, when Worldwide Boxing Club in the Bronx welcomed an all-star lineup of quarterfinal bouts in the 2012 Daily News Golden Gloves.

After playing with the left-right combo for two rounds, Cruz connected in Round 3, stinging Vazquez with the Empire City Casino unch of the ight and earning a win by stoppage.

“That’s what I do; I like to take my time,” Cruz said. “I feel like I’m No. 1. I made it to the Olympic trials last year. Right now I have to let people know that 141 (pounds) is mine.”

Brian Ceballo (NYAC) did well to prove it will be tough to cruise to the title. In the second round, the defending 141-open champ served out a stoppage to challenger Lewis Aponte (Juan LaPorte).

“I want to stay undefeated,” he said. “Last year I was the underdog. This year I want to win to keep that title.”

Wesley Ferrer (Brotherhood BC) and Jose DelaRosa (Universal BC) will round out a dangerous 141-pound open semifinal.

With a calm demeanor and calculated punching, Titus Williams (Freeport BC) looked like a titan against Luis Mancilla (Long Island BC). Though Williams owned the 132-pound bout from start to finish, it seemed that at times he stayed patient, even when Mancilla looked defenseless.

“Sometimes you don’t want to underestimate your opponent,” said the P.C. Richard and Son Boxer of the Night. “You don’t always want to go for the kill. If you get caught, one punch can change the whole fight.”

Brooklyn’s Bishop Ford High School will play host to the tournament’s last quarterfinal round on Friday night. The bruising super heavyweight open class will compete for the first time since the tournament’s opening night at B.B. King’s.
