Late rally falls short at Knicks

NY KNICKS 114, 119 of the MILWAUKEE BUCKS

MILWAUKEE — Tyson Chandler spent most of the night standing on the sidelines barking defensive instructions to his companions, many of whom are either hard of hearing or simply conscientious objectors.

It wasn't until the Knicks had arrived at the hour of despair — down 15 with eight minutes to play — which finally obeyed their orders and defensive Center injured leader. And ultimately, it was too late.

"Once you go down from 15 that everything has to go right and we could not do," said Mike D'antoni after rallying the Knicks ' came and they lost 119-114, Milwaukee Bucks Friday night. "We could not get enough stops. Hopefully we can return Tyson Chandler soon enough. "

The Knicks lost all four matches in their journey and return home, while 18-22 Milwaukee, the team chasing them in the rankings, improved to 16-24.

Somehow, the Knicks lost a game in which they come into contact with their first 11 shots, a game in which the Bucks used only seven players in the second half because of injuries to Andrew Bogut, Stephen Jackson and others.

The Knicks, with their star-studded lineup, couldn't beat a team with Beno Udrih Ersan Ilyasova, and Larry Sanders. In fact, they were outscored 58-49 in the second half by strappassero team in Milwaukee.

"We're not too worried about crime than now," said Carmelo Anthony. "We have to tighten up on d."

Anthony had another rough finish. He made his first four shots and then went 3 for 14 the rest of the way, including an air ball on a 3-point attempt during the end of the Knicks '. He also missed the first of two three throws with 10.8 seconds left and trailing the Knicks 116-113.

Amar'e Stoudemire led the Knicks with 27 points and 11 rebounds before fouling and Jeremy Lin added 20points and 13 assists. D'Antoni gone long stretches with Lin and Baron Davis together in the backcourt, and that was the combination that got the Knicks within three minutes from 111112 to end.

But on back-to-back possessions, a tired Davis lost a short turnaround jumper and Lin threw a pass over the head of Stoudemire for its fifth turnover. On the next possession of Milwaukee, Anthony blocked shot of Drew Gooden, Ilyasova, who led the Bucks with 26 points, beat Davis for a rebound and was fouled with 01:06 to play.

Then after Anthony responded with a layup that made it a one point game with 52.7 seconds remaining, Ilyasova delivered the fatal blow. This time, Lin forced Brandon Jennings to throw up a desperation shot with the shot clock running down and the ball was deflected into the air by Gooden for Ilyasova, who went into the trash. The two strikers were playing volleyball in Milwaukee and the Knicks were caught watching.

"That was the needle that knocked the air out of the balloon," said Anthony. "We played great defense and then to have it come down to putback ... There was some small dramas that we must correct the stretch."

Jennings had 25 points and 10 assists, and Mike Dunleavy scored 25 points off the bench, including 14 in the opening quarter.

D'Antoni renewed starting lineup to include Landry fields, who finished with 18 points, and J.R. Smith, who ended frustrated. Smith played 18 minutes, tried to 18 shots and it was sulking on the bench for the entire second half.

"I mean, whenever I do not play the way I feel I've grown accustomed to play I certainly intend to be frustrated," said Smith. "Ve got to do a better job of channeling positive energy to my team."

Iman Shumpert played just five minutes, and D'antoni said the rookie was "focused", as he was supposed to be. This is a bad sign with Division-leading Philadelphia coming to the garden on Sunday. An encouraging sign is that Davis, who finished with nine points and nine assists, is always better. But really, the Knicks need Chandler to get healthy. Quickly.

"We've got to try to find a way to dig deeper," Anthony said, "and find the energy to win a game."
