PORT St. LUCIE — R.a. Dickey and D.J. Carrasco were in the bullpen during the first inning Tuesday, for different reasons, but both have been hijacked by the same shiny object. When you Met, and Johan Santana is cruising, stops and looks; the season hangs on these outputs.
"It was hard to warm up and look at him because I just that in him coming out of this, felt good," said Dickey, who was supposed to be preparing to follow Santana. Between launches, he was caught looking, while the Mets once (and future?) the ACE has survived two scoreless innings in his first major league action from September 10, 2010.
Santana threw 29 pitches for strikes and 17 presented the St. Louis Cardinals with a fastball 88-90 km/h, according to the transcript of the stadium. Pitching coach Dan Warthen said that the radar gun team had Santana in 90-92 mph.
"Finally, I had the opportunity to go out there and get that first half," said Santana, who missed all of 2011 after shoulder surgery on September 14, 2010.
Although the true test of his time will come later in the week, when my shoulder surgically rebuilt Santana will be resilient or sore or feeling, lefty's teammates couldn't help but feel compelled and excited by the promising start.
Carrasco was personally invested in a strong appearance of Carlos Santana. The relief was expected to pitch in successive innings, so he ate a heavy lunch of soup and sandwiches just before the match.
Subsequently, Warthen said to get ready in the first inning, when Santana wobbled. Fortunately for the Mets and for the digestive process of Carrasco, Santana did not waver. In fact, he excelled, leaving his teammates to shower lavish praise.
"Is inspired to look, man," said Carrasco.
Inspiring is a heavy Word, but couldn't resist Mets; Santana looked sharp. It is still too early to predict with confidence start opening day, but that did not prevent the pitcher or his team enjoy the incremental process.
Santana, despite measured comments later hailed Terry Collins with a firm, "Yeah, baby!", leaving the game.
"The key, the next few days, (will be) trying to throw my bullpen and see if I am ready for my next startup," the left-hander said after a few minutes. "But, again, the way that i feel now and the way that I ended up the game today was good. So it's a good sign. Hopefully we will be back on the mound in five games. "
Collins knows that the next session of Santana bullpen, which will arrive Thursday or Friday, it will be more of an action game on Tuesday. It is one thing to feel strong during competition and another to recover without a halt. Yet, the manager tasted a funny afternoon.
"We take enough body shots as it is," said Collins. "We need to be able to put a smile on our face and say ' Gosh darn, that was a good day."
It was really a good day, no matter what follows. As such, Collins and his players could be forgiven for falling into mild hyperbole.
"God Almighty," says the manager. "I don't know if we can be a big step forward today than that."
