he father of a Winthrop hockey player potentially could face state charges for aiming a laser pointer at the Medway-Ashland goalie during Wednesday's playoff game.
Medway-Ashland protested the outcome of their 3-1 loss, requesting that the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association allow a replay of the third period, when the score was tied, 1-1, at the point of the father's attempts to blind the opposing goalie.
The appeal was rejected Friday afternoon.
"It’s kind of like when you look at the sun and then you look away you see that spot and you can’t see for a couple of seconds. You shake your head and try to get it out of the system and just keep focusing, but it’s difficult,” Medway-Ashland goalie Kathryn Hamer told WBZ-TV.
In a letter released on the ruling, deputy director William N. Gaine, Jr. cited Section 3, Article a. of the National Federation Ice Hockey Rules, which states 'In case of any dispute, the decision of the referees shall be final and there shall be no appeal.'
Gaine later wrote, "Accordingly, the MIAA affirms that the decision of the referees shall be final."
The father has been banned from all future school events and won't be in attendance for Winthrop's next playoff game vs. Braintree on Saturday.
"In closing, please know that the MIAA Ice Hockey Committee will consider this incident while reviewing standards to insure optimal tournament experiences for all," Gaine wrote.
