Kirk Cameron, who came under fire for calling homosexuality "unnatural", says that he is the one who is the victim of "hate."
The actor "fireproof" 41 years was on the defensive from sparking an uproar after saying same-sex marriage was "destructive to many of the foundations of civilization" during an interview Friday with CNN'S Piers Morgan.
Although society has a star on the sitcom degli anni ' 80 "Growing Pains", Cameron became an evangelical Christian who is vocal about his religion.
"Spoken as honestly as I could, but some people believe that my answers were not loving towards those in the gay community," said ABC News in a statement issued Tuesday. "This is not true. I can definitely say that it is the Mission of my life for the sake of all people.
"I should be able to express moral opinions on social issues, especially those that have been the foundation of Western civilization for 2,000 years — without being slandered, accused of inciting hatred and said by those who preach ' tolerance ' that I need to fold my beliefs to their moral standards or shut up when I'm in the public square."
Cameron added that he was encouraged by the support of gay friends.
A spokesman for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance against defamation, however, was impressed by the clarification of Cameron.
"Saying that gay people are ' harmful to ' could be ' love ' in the minds of Kirk Cameron, but his youth gay and bullied really suffering as adult who espouse these ideas Cameron," said Graddick Herndon, GLAAD's Senior Director of programs and communications.
"Cameron used his platform to attack American gays and now is trying to play the victim in an attempt to sell his next film. That Cameron is in danger of health and safety of young people in order to do this speaks for itself.
"So many Americans, popular celebrities and Christian leaders have stood up and said that his point of view is out of touch. The fundamental dignity of gay people should no longer be a debate in this country.
"Obviously, Cameron has the right to recite his anti-gay talking points, just like fair-minded Americans have the right to tell him that his viewpoint is harmful and have no place in modern America".
Co-star "Growing Pains" by Cameron Tracey Gold quickly distanced herself from her on-screen brother's comments over the weekend.
"I am a strong supporter of the LGBT community, and I think # in equal rights for everyone. # NOH8 #, "you LOVE Twitter.
