Two Colorado men who took their dead buddy’s corpse along for a night of partying last year were sentenced to probation Thursday in Denver, KUSA-TV reported.
Robert Young, 43, and Mark Rubinson, 25, also admitted to using the dead man’s credit card to pay for drinks at bars and strip clubs, and to fuel up at a gas station while the corpse sat in the backseat of Rubinson’s SUV.
Both pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of abusing a corpse, and Young also pleaded guilty to a felony charge of identity theft. Rubinson faces two years of probation and Young received a one-year probation. Both men must undergo mental-health and substance-abuse evaluations, receive treatment and drug testing, and perform community service.
Neither Young nor Rubinson was accused of killing 43-year-old Jeffrey Jarrett, who died from a lethal combination of drugs and alcohol, according to Reuters.
Last August, Young and Rubinson found Jarrett unconscious at the home he and Young shared. Instead of calling the police, they tossed the dead man’s body in the backseat and took him for a ride, making stops at bars, a Mexican restaurant and ending up at a local strip club, all while the corpse remained in the car, KWGN-TV reported.
Rubinson told authorities he thought Jarrett was just drunk, and Young said he didn’t want to believe that Jarrett was dead, according to KUSA-TV.
The men finally called police when they left the strip club.
The case has been compared to the 1989 movie “Weekend at Bernie’s,” in which two friends find their boss has been killed and decide to carry on with their weekend as planned, with the body in tow.
