It may not be the Big Dance, but the Manhattan Jaspers will still be dancing nonetheless in March this year.

One year removed from its 6-25 season, Manhattan will continue its remarkable turnaround season after the school accepted a bid to participate in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT). The Jaspers will travel to the University of Albany for their first-round game which will be played Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

“We’re very excited to have the opportunity to play in March,” Manhattan first-year coach Steve Masiello said. “Obviously all games this time of year are tough, otherwise teams wouldn’t be here. It gives us a chance to get our young roster postseason experience. We look forward to getting off to a good start next week.”

Manhattan, which posted the greatest turnaround in the nation this year among Division I schools when it posted 14 more wins this season over last year – the Jaspers went 20-12 this season – was eliminated from the MAAC Tournament in Springfield, Mass. last weekend by Siena in the quarterfinal round. Manhattan, which finished just 3-15 in the MAAC last season, surprised many by posting a 12-6 mark in the conference this season and finishing in third place after being picked eighth in the preseason poll.

The 20 wins by the Jaspers marked just the 11th time the school has logged that many wins in the school’s 106-year history and was the first such season since the 2005-06 campaign.

The CIT, which saw Santa Clara edge Iona in the title game a year ago, will hold its first-round games from March 13-15. Second-round games tip off from March 16 through 18 with the quarterfinals set for March 20-21. The tournament semifinals get underway on March 23 and 24 with the championship game set for Wednesday March 28. All games are played at campus sites.

This will be Manhattan’s first postseason soiree since 2006 when the Jaspers participated in the NIT and defeated FDU and Maryland before being bounced from the tournament.

The Jaspers are led by junior guard George Beamon, who led the MAAC in scoring this season with an 18.6 ppg. average and also feature MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Rhamel Brown, freshman Emmy Andujar, who landed on the MAC All-Rookie Team and sophomore guard Mike Alvarado, who was named to the Third Team All-Conference.

The Great Danes (19-14) are led by 6-4 junior Gerardo Suero, who was named the America East Conference Player of the Year by CollegeInsider.com and averaged 21.6 points a game.

The entire field for the CIT Tournament will be announced Sunday night after the NCAA and NIT fields have been announced.
